Just curious... how do you guys justify a trip to openworld or any
conference for that matter. I just started at a new company and my
manager seems to have big expectations. He expects you to come back
with information to solve problems in our environment.
I've been to two openworlds before and maybe its just me but I think
this expectation is unrealistic. Basically what happened is he sent
someone last year to openworld... that person came back with some
presentations that helped tune a peoplesoft environment. This
information could have been found in a morning of searching on the
net.
Personally I think there are much better ways to solve your problems,
metalink being one. I view openworld as a chance to network with
fellow DBA's, sit through presentations that I normally wouldn't have
time to do (ie expand my horizons).. Get exposure to vendors and
their various applications. Most importantly get a feel for the
direction Oracle is heading. Whats on their radar screen? Its not a
place you goto to solve your problems.
So, i'm just curious how you guys justify conferences?
