I have just finished the Oracle University, Oracle 9i Database Administration Fundamentals I course and the accompanying student manual states the following:
Oracle Instance
"An Oracle Instance is a means to access an Oracle database." This much we
all realize, but it goes one... "Always opens one and only one database"
(this is your answer I hope).
