I saw a interesting method at a different website.
Follow the steps outlined above, however if you break it or find a
interesting feature :) write a whitepaper on it and publish on your own
website or Oracle related website.
If you write a good script (and find noone else has done something
similar) publish the script via oramag etc.
Specialisation is more likely to get you a job, so play with some new
features of Oracle and understand them and publish some results...
Getting the experience (to start with) is difficult, that is why
demostrating your ability is important.
Offering to do unpaid work (pro-bono?) in return for references might
help as well.

Get used to the fact the most common saying heard when there is a problem is "Must be a database problem". This will occur even when the database has been up (not including scheduled downtime) over a year, performance has improved out sight since you started... the life of a DBA :)
