Rebuild indexes

I've a problem with index rebuilding.
When i specify PARALLEL in ALTER INDEX REBUILD command, the initial
extent for the index is greather then the old one.( I specify initial,
netx, pctfree, pctused in alter index rebuild ).
Sometimes, with NOPARALLEL option, the total amount of space in blocks
is greater then the old one.
We have Oracle 8.1.6 on a Sun Server.
