NLS - Displaying special Swedish characters

I have been in contact with Oracle about this for nearly 1 month, and they are now clutching at straws. So far, we have discovered that the database is storing the characters correctly as I have sent oracle the block to check. They now think it is something to do with the way it is being displayed on the screen, stty settings.

But would this effect the result on the web site??

I am using America_American.UTF8

8.1.6 on Sun 5.6

Any comments greatly appreciated.
