Hello,

we have a rather alarming behaviour in the interaction of Perl's DBD::Oracle with Oracle 8i. To be more specific:

we have two computers, one called 'castrato' and one called 'beavis'.
'beavis' is a dual CPU UltraSparc solaris system, with 1 GB RAM, etc.,
which is used for system testing, while 'castrato' is used for development.

While both computers had Oracle 8.0.4, 'beavis' was always two times faster than the other machine.
After doing an upgrade of Oracle from 8.0.4 -> 8.1.6, the relative speed was reversed(!).
I mean, now the fast machine is always *slower* from the slow machine with 8.0.4, and that's a major problem (else, our customer should cancel the planned 'upgrade' to 8.1.6).

More details:

Oracle:

beavis: upgrade from 8.0.4 --> 8.1.6
castrato: 8.0.4
OS:
===
beavis 5.6 Generic_105181-21 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-250 castrato 5.6 Generic_105181-17 sun4u sparc SUNW,Ultra-60

common software

perl5 (5.0 patchlevel 5 subversion 3)
DBI: 1.13
DBD::Oracle 1.0.3

A small script (DBI connect() and disconnect() only) showed that
'castrato' (the small

SUN) spent 0.1+ sec user time , while 'beavis' (the big SUN) spent 0.2+ (!) sec user time.

Any insights in the source of the problem??

Regards,
Nick Fotis.
