a question about designing master-detail tables

hi everyone,
i'm new to designing oracle database and one of the questions i constantly ask myself is whether i should design the database to use less space but use more of processing (by way of table join between tables with master-detail relationship) or the other way round - meaning store more information in the detail table and don't use the table join. how to decide such trade off?? please help!
