I am currently looking for interesting DBA work.

My name is Douglas Burns and I have 6 years solid Oracle DBA experience across a wide range of Unix and PC platforms, running from version 6.0.36 through to 7.3. This includes a spell working for Oracle as a DBA course lecturer.

As well as all standard DBA skills, my speciality is performance tuning (including SQL tuning).

Specific Duties
Development of various reports using Reports 2.0.13 (Windows) for client loan performance analysis, document tracking and post-update data validation. Specific attention was given to tuning, resulting in some very complex SQL statements.

Development of a procedure to populate Oracle database from mainframe extract files. This procedure consisted of UNIX shell scripts, Loader control files and non-trivial PL/SQL scripts, used to check business rule and data integrity during the load process.

Specific Duties
Reconfiguration of existing version 6.0.37 database (used for evaluation purposes) and migration to version 7.0.12, followed by the installation of two additional 7.0.12 instances, with associated CDE tools, across a variety of platforms.

Development of configuration and operations standards, using OFA and MOSES documentation as source material. The primary objective was the implementation of 24x7 operation (24x6 on my departure) and ease of administration of a distributed environment. All installations complied with these standards.

Development of a suite of programs (Reports 2, Graphics 2, SQL*Plus), utilities (C-Shell) and automatic DBA alert procedures (C-Shell) to facilitate management of a growing, distributed environment.

Development of procedure to refresh a 35 million+ row Geophysical database, linked to a Model 204 extract job on the ES/9000 mainframe. This included an extended shell script to control parallel downloads and updates, based on ftp and SQL*Loader, as well as SQL scripts to control creation of Referential Integrity constraints. This procedure was executed on a weekly basis, in order to provide data to Geologists and Geophysicists.

Development of a procedure to reorganise extents by tablespace, based on C-Shell and SQL scripts, and Export/Import parameter files.

Extensive use of auditing facilities, as required by Aramco Installation Security, including modification of table creation scripts to prevent SYSTEM tablespace fragmentation and free-space problems.

Providing support to third-party vendors in the creation of GIS environments.

Informal training of two members of staff to act as replacements on my departure, including the development of Oracle Book documentation to provide on-line access to site-specific documentation.
