MTS, processes and memory

In a discussion with ORACLE support, they stated that MTS uses 5-7 % more CPU; they also stated that the "break even" point for using MTS versus "traditional" configuration is above 400 (four-hundred) users.
They also said that memory-usage for a ORACLE-user process ("shadow process") is up to .5 MB; on HP-UX and AIX, I have always seen the processes using memory in the 9 MB range.
When do you use MTS ?
What is your experience with memory-usage of oracle-processes ? Are there methods to tune memory-requirements ?
