I don't know about releases earlier, but we were using replication on version 7.1.6 on AIX until we upgraded to 7.3.2. Note that we upgraded. The replication under 7.1.6 has buckos of problems, some of which were fixed with patches and the rest were fixed by upgrading to 7.3.2.
