SQL Education/Training

Could anyone help a newbie to databases find some good basic ground work reading. I have trolled the book shops and the WWW and have not found anything of any value.

I am booked into an Oracle course but would like a head start. I have sold myself through to a brand new department which is setting up an Oracle database but my skills are more programming.
