Well, I think that Sun has organized a group of database companies to create a JDBC standard for Java/Database connectivity.

Sun has a draft of the proposed standard at: http://splash.javasoft.com/jdbc/

They say that the draft will be in review until June/July. I don't know if Oracle will be required to do anything special to support it. They're among the list of companies supporting the effort though.
