Hi Richard,

I don't understand why you say THE VMS SYSTEM user can't perform privileged Oracle Opérations...

I'm running Oracle 7.1.3.2 on OpenVMS (vax) 6.1 and i can connect internal and shutdown the oracle database from the system User. But you should grant following identifier (ORA_DBA, ORA_<sid>_dba, ORA_OPER or ORA_<sid>_OPER, i'm using ORA_<sid>_OPER) to the SYSTEM account (look at Oracle7 for VAX OpenVMS installation guide page 2-25 "Setting Process Rights Identifiers and at the administrator's guide for OpenVMS in page c-13). For the shutdown i just start a command file from within the SYSHUTDWN.COM wich run the right ORAUSER_xxx.com and then runs SQLDBA to do the shutdown.
