  u sure do need root access while installing but not really in the   daily maintenance. But u must and should have the DB root access   ie. login as internal. Also, u should be a part of the dba group   on UNIX to login as internal. u need not be a part of dba group to   login as SYS and SYSTEM.

  I am not really sure about the backups.
