You don't have to shut down the database to take a backup. Take a look at the DBA guide discussion of ALTER TABLESPACE...BEGIN BACKUP etc. Your point about backing up a mostly-empty database is a good one. The Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility announced this week addresses that problem; check with your Oracle rep for details.

I don't know anything about Auspex but...are you sure you want to run Oracle with an NFS-mounted database?
