We use the same configuration an 486 and on pentiums.
Our config.sys looks like this and it works fine.
DEVICE=D:\DOS\HIMEM.SYS
DEVICE=D:\DOS\EMM386.EXE RAM FRAME=NONE
I think the otions "RAM" and "FRAME=NONE" are important.
