SQL*NET / PPP

I am trying to connect my pc to a remote database via point-to-point-protocol (PPP). Obviously, there is winsock installed underneath. Can someone provide some basic pointers on configuring sql*net on my client? Perhaps a quick checklist of obvious screw-ups to avoid.
