ORACLE_SID and SQL*Net Clients

Is it possible to use the ORACLE_SID environment variable to specify a remote database server as the default database for any clients you run to connect to?

I am using SQL*Net V2 between 2 hp-ux boxes and can successfully connect with SQL*Plus like this:

sqlplus me/mypasswd_at_database

How can I use just:

sqlplus me/mypasswd

Hope it can be done.
