Everything is relative. If you have a small system with few writes raid5 is fine. Even a midsize OLTP system could run on raid5 as long as they did not run any long running updates or inserts during operating hours. My experience is that on raid5 and large batch insert or update will bring your OLTP operation to a vertual hault. I had queries go from 5 seconds to almost a minute. Updates go from 10 seconds to 10 minutes. I personally would never use raid5 for database. Raid 0+1 is the best.
