On a PC (Windows or OS/2), it uses the HOSTS file. Therefore, in a simple network you don't require a TNSNAMES.ORA file. For WfWG and MS TCP/IP-32, the HOSTS file *must* be in the Windows directory. (I changed the DOS one and wondered why it wouldn't work :-( Mind you, it still isn't working, but we (Oracle and I) think the problem is at the server end.)
