ARCHIVE Logging

We are setting up an RS/6000 R10 system as EDI server using Oracle version 7. The system needs to be up 7X24. The operation could not afford to lose data, therefore archive logging is the only option. I have gone through the admin manual and although it contains valuable info about the subject, it doesn't deal with real life issues on set up and suggested configuration. Can anyone please provide me with their own archvie logging experience on the how to's and what to expect scenarios? I am also intending to set the archives on the disk initially and later tar it off into the tape. Is this good idea? I would like to automate the process as much as possible. Any advice and comments will be much appreciated.
