I highly recommend the setup you talked about, that is archiving to disk first, then tape. I also recommend what we have done:

We have created an NFS partition on our file server, and mounted it to the production Oracle box. The redo_logs are written to this NFS partition. That way, if we lose the Oracle box, we do not lose the redo_logs. We also mirror this NFS server, making the backups of the backups twice as safe.

Also, we have a separate file system for production and development redologs. That way a development db load will not bring down our production server, etc. We also use an online backup script that does a hot backup every night. Took a year to write and debug,,,,Interested, drop me a line
