It's a very good intro to relational databases (even for non-Oracle users). It includes good tutorials on the basics and an alphabetical command reference. I use it as my primary reference on command syntax, because it pulls all the relevant stuff into one handy package.

Perhaps more importantly, it includes pages and pages of advice and examples on more advanced uses of SQL. It helps get a newbie beyond the "two-dimensional thinking" stage and into joins, subqueries, tree-structured queries, etc.

BTW, I have used the first two editions; haven't seen the third. The first covered Oracle 6; the second added some discussion of Oracle 7 and updated the alphabetical reference. I presume the third has more on how to use Oracle 7 features. I'd be interested in hearing from someone who knows what has been added.
