 I am not too sure which platform, UNIX version or even shell you are using but may I suggest that you try it out once more and do a ps and see if that is still the case. I doubt it as the shell will always expand $PASSWD and your process list will display

         sqlplus username/passwd _at_sqlscript

Try it out and if it does hide it please let us know which UNIX box and version you are using.
