Oracle 7.1.4 problem with TWO_TASK

Our DBA recently upgraded our Oracle version to 7.1.4, and ever since, I've been having to set the TWO_TASK environment variable to null in order to run SQL*ReportWriter of SQL*plus. I know this turns off the multi-threaded server, but why won't these tools come up properly with the multi-threading turned on? BTW, we use SCO Unix.
