Goodaye from downunder.

I am searching for a good set of VBX custom controls to help me create data forms in Visual Basic to access data stored in an ORACLE database on a remote UNIX server. Hence accessing ORACLE7 server via ODBC driver and SQL*Net.

I am about to develop a client/server application. Although I could reasonably comfortably develop the application in ORACLE*Forms4, I am worried about the resource demands. At a recent ORACLE OpenWorld Conference here in Australia ORACLE admitted that the footprint required to run a FormsV4.5 application was only marginally less!!!!

Some of the functionality in ORACLE*Forms is quite powerful. It would be nice to think that a good VBX toolset could deliver similar power, but with a reduced foot print for the application.

I am convinced that VB can deliver an application that is far more extensive than can ORACLE*Forms(ie. third party VBX libraries for fax, email, spreadsheet, automatic data capture, etc).

Also the resulting application can with the help of ODBC be backend database server independent, hence extending range of an application.

Also the VB application can be compiled and distributed without too many hangups of licence restrictions.

I don't want to use VB's data controls and bound controls because they use the JET engine behind access and I have heard that this is where performance problems arise. ODBC apparently cops some unfair criticism that is really due to the JET engine.

I am aware that ORACLE are releasing a set of VBX tools in their forth coming ORACLE for Windows product. It would be interesting to here comments on this one.

If you know of a good VBX Toolset please email details to me on :
