Hi,

I'd blame your saleperson and buyers for this. Before you buy you should have a clear idea of what you're getting and what its going to look like. Servers (HP series 800, SPARCservers, SPARCcenters, ...) don't come with X-terminals because it adds expense, pinches valuable CPU time and contexts, and X clients can be run and displayed on remote workstation or PC X server. I think it is desirable that everything be split into pieces---that way you can configure exactly what you want. For example, some people might not appreciate a bundled CDROM drive if they already have several spread around the place.

Sun have "base packages" (my term) consisting of a particular box/CPU/memory/ disk/cdrom/console/user-license combination. In general the choice of base packages for a particluar machine is wide enough not be be restrictive. If you can identify a base backage that is a subset of your needs then go for it because it is always less expensive to buy a bundled item than to add it on as a separate pricelist item.

Perhaps people would be well-advised to make a list of what they want before they buy. In addition to hardware, specify console, admin tools, backup utility, performance monitoring tools, etc. Then ask the salespeople what is bundled and what is extra.

Cheers

Gavin
