Row_Locking parameter

I need some additional information on the row_locking parameter mentioned in the Oracle V7 RDBMS DBA Guide. Primarily: what's the difference? Does a value of ALWAYS mean that you only get a row-level lock whenever an UPDATE is performed, while INTENT means that you get a row-level lock with a SELECT..FOR UPDATE as well as an actual UPDATE? Does an always mean that you cannot lock using SELECT..FOR UPDATE?

The book is rather cryptic here. Can anyone shed some light?
