I agree with Barry here. I have experienced (two years ago), as I am sure many others have, the aftermath of a *failed* untested recovery procedure. Since that time, every backup procedure that I create is tested thoroughly before it is completely implemented.

I find that the best type of recovery procedure testing is to take the backup media(s) to another machine or preferably a completely different site and execute the recovery procedure, in effect rebuilding the entire system and/or application. Occasionly the machine manufacturer (e.g. ICL, DEC etc) will lend an organisation or try to arrange machine time for such recovery procedures to be tested.

In addition to rebuilding a complete system/application and in the case of Oracle, it is well worth testing the *point in time* recovery using log archives etc.
