I have read that in order to use the multi-threaded server option, you must connect to the database through SQL*NET V2 even if the application is on the same machine. I am wondering if anyone is using MTS in this way and if so, what benefits has it brought you and what problems has it caused. Thank you for any information you can provide.

It depends on the version of Oracle7 you have. I know that on the Solaris 2.x platform, before Oracle 7.0.16, you had to connect through Sql*Net to get MTS type connections; but starting from Oracle 7.0.16, the installation asks you if you want to configure the MTS, and if you answer Yes, it will configure MTS even for IPC connections (MTS for Sql*Net connections is always available).
