I think the answer is... Denormalize! Split the newsgroups, and duplicate all into one newsgroup. Read-only, with followups to split newsgroups. Is this possible? Heck, if the net can do moderation, it ought to be able to auto-crosspost.

Keeping it all in one newsgroup and deciding what to read by subject is unworkable, as there is no consistency by subject. I know my following this group varies widely as my time permits - usually I could care less about some of the proposed groups, and would be glad to skip them.
