Using exp/imp file over different o/s

I have been trying to move an Oracle database from a VMS machine running 7.0.12
to a HP-UX machine running 7.0.15 using the export/import facility. On the 
import, Oracle comes back with IMP-00009 abnormal end of export file. The error
book says to report to Oracle with export file (and they might get back to me 
before Christmas).-(



In thinking that it might be a problem with pulling the dmp file over the net
via ftp I tried using different record lengths with no avail. Has anyone out 
there actually been successful porting a dmp?
