I have implemented Manufacturing and have a reasonable knowledge of Financials
Both sets of modules are very powerful and have been considerably improved
in the latest release (R10).
Financials as a package has been around for quite a few years and my knowledge
base isn't broad enough to be able to tell you that its the best around,
however it is a stable product having support from many companies including
several major multinationals e.g.Honeywell, Texas Instruments etc. I cannot
believe that their Financial Controllers would buy something that was not
capable of supporting their business.
Manufacturing however I know reasonably well having worked with it since early 1992. Release 9, now being superceded by R 10 was really Oracle's first production release of a Manufacturing System, it had several gaps in its ability to run in a process enviroment but was more suited to an engineering setup. From what I've seen of R10 they have worked hard to improve the flexibility of the system making it easier to do the critical work from within a couple of screens, without having to move about into different modules to get the work done. It looks as though a great deal of thought has gone into the functionality of R10.
Just to add that I don't work for Oracle but I am a freelance contractor using
the Oracle applications to earn a living, I have found that as long as you
are willing to invest the time, BEFORE you consider which system you want, to
take a long look at how your business operates. This will then allow you to
see what the advantages of any system will be and where any possible problems
may arise.
I am probably preaching to the converted butuse the opportunity to improve
the business in any way possible, don't re-computerise any mistakes you made
in the past
Good luck in your choice.
