'ODBC' is the middleware that sits on a PC. Then an ODBC compliant application talks to the 'ODBC Driver' which in turns talks to the RBDMS.

Ingres ODBC eg.

ODBC APP (Access, Excel 5.0 etc)

Ingres ODBC Driver (PC)
Ingres Net (PC)
TCP/IP Stack (PC-NFS, LWP, Wollogong)
| <---- Ethernet Network (or can be serial linked)
Ingres Net (UNIX)
DBMS Server

So the answer to the question is. All you need is an ODBC driver with Ingres Net for your PC, Ingres Net for the DBMS server and TCP/IP on both sides.

The Unix platform is irrelevant, as long as Ingres Net is available for it.

The ODBC driver is free with Ingres Net for the PC (If you ask for it)

I hope this helps.
