There is also no _standard_ means of taking an action automatically at system shutdown, which I think is what you're after. SCO executes the scripts in /etc/rc0.d; hp-ux looks in /etc/shutdown.d. No idea whether AIX looks for anything or where.
My experience says that you should differentiate the routine things you want done _before_ a system shutdown is started from the things you want done automatically _by_ the shutdown. A good example is database shutdown: before a system is routinely shutdown, I want a "normal" shutdown of the database (or at least nothing more drastic than "immediate"). Once the shutdown has commenced, however, IMHO there's nothing you can safely do except a "shutdown abort". Otherwise, for instance, in a power failure you can have your system shutdown waiting patiently for termination of something that looks like a database connection or transaction, while the UPS batteries run down with the filesystems still mounted and .....
I figured this out using the classic rule set: a) good judgement is a result of experience; and b) experience is a result of bad judgement.
