Steve Jobs announced the partnership between Sun and Next to include Nextstep Object technology as part of Solaris in what they are going to call OpenStep. This is BIG BIG BIG news. He also did a demo with PDA. That is Nextstep's latest distributed object layer technology. Basically, he did a demo where he had a nextstep application which was built by putting different objects together. It happened to be an application that plots the mandlebrot set. He demo'd it on a 486 running Nextstep and when he started it it started slowly plotting the set. It was obvious that it would take 5-10 minutes to plot the whole thing.

Then, as it was plotting, we opened another window on the 486 with the same program, but this time he changed a value in a dialog box which told the app to use a copy of the fractal calculation object that existed on another faster machine on the network. He hit go and the whole think plotted in seconds. It was instantly a distributed app by merely pointing to certain objects within the app and saying "use these objects from other machines".

That is WAY cool. It trivializes distributed computing and could be a major step towards practical client/server app development. That is what all the excitement was about. And Steve Jobs is also just a dynamic speaker to begin with. He is definately good at what he does.
