Title: The Information Superhighway; Implications and Issues Moderator: Mike Stonebraker (UC Berkeley) Participants: Michael Brodie (GTE Labs) Gio Wiederhold (ARPA) Erich Neuhold (GMD) Gary Herman (Bellcore)
Synopsis: It is nearly self-evident that high speed, public networking will reach nearly every desktop and home during this decade. Although it is unclear exactly who will provide this service to the home (cable provider, RBOC, wireless provider), it is clear that a large number of services will be attached to this network (restaurant guides, bulletin boards, home shopping, entertainment options, dating services, vastly expanded yellow pages, directory services, etc.) Many of these are fundamentally data base applications; however, they have the following characteristics:
- must be "findable" (service location)
- must be runable by a totally untrained person
- "TV remote" may be main user input device
- network provider may dictate environment (client OS, client-server protocol)
- must be "pay for service"
Such an environment raises troubling questions about user interfaces,
security, privacy, standards, service discovery, information
retrieval, and support for multi-media. In addition, there are
difficult regulatory issues, such as guaranteed ability to place a
server on the network (open access), restrictions on content
(pornography servers), and legality of electronic transactions (the
dog steps on the remote and orders a truckload of diapers).
This panel explores this "brave new world", especially as it relates to unsolved research problems of interest to the DBMS community. To complement the newness of the topic material, the panel will utilize video, and parody in addition to the normal technical discussion.
