Although I never worked with SQL*Net for Unix, I had the same problem with SQL*Net for DOS and Windows. As I read the SQL*Net TCP/IP User's Guide, it looks to me that you are using the TWO_TASK variable incorrectly. IMHO, the text means that this variable says which alias to look up in the /etc/sqlnet file for the default connect string to be used. So, in /etc/sqlnet you would add a line:
test T:eve:test
and then, after setting TWO_TASK to "test" you should be able to enter
sqlplus scott/tiger
without being hit with the ORA-06401 error.
