I have a simpler solution... I just create an alias in my .cshrc:
al ORACLE_SID_NAME setenv ORACLE_SID ORACLE_SID_NAME
I have an alias for each ORACLE_SID. When I want to switch instances, I just type the alias name (in my case, I use the instance name).
