Paul,
There was an interesting paper in Oracle's InTegrator magazine about two
years ago on using raw devices. If you send me a fax number I will fax
it to you. The paper was written by one of the best Oracle kernel folks
I have ever talked with. The long and short of it was, that you won't
gain much using raw devices and raw devices make the DBA role much more
difficult. On an IBM RS/6000 because the Logical Volume Manager control
all io raw devices are a complete waste of time.
