Alan,

I was in the same situation as yourself and had a look at all these products. The only product that we are currently using is DBA*Master and still looking for others.

The following are some of my comments.

In article <1993Jul15.094615.1_at_kean.ucs.mun.ca>, alan_at_kean.ucs.mun.ca ( ALAN C. KEARLEY, DATABASE ADMINISTRATOR) writes:

I like this product. Some of its best features are

-I can adminster both the SYstem admin side and Oracle DBA using the same       product
-I can issue 1 command simultaneously across all that I am administering     -it allows us to use our existing utilities as they can be incorprated       into the product
    -its GUI

There is another company in Australia with the same company name as DB_vision with a product called VDBA (Visual Databae Administrator). Very limited functionality.

Use it and like it. Wish they improve their 'advisor' a bit more. Disadvantages:

  • does not carry out any rpc
  • does not carry out any DBA admin stuff
  • does not allow you to hook in your utilities

Advantages:

  • can monitor remote databases
  • can monitor multiple databases simultaneously
  • simple to use but very useful

Some of the other products you may have missed out on are

(1) EcoTools from EcoSystems
(2) DBstats I think using an SMNP manager called Iview
(3) VDBA from DB-Vision in Australia

As well, other things to look out for include:

- how are data stored
- load on machine
- do they keep historical information?
- can the historical information help you in your performance and capacity
  planning.?
- what hardware do they require?
- is it only Oracle or other RDBMS as well?
- are the results correlated against the operating system?

It is my believe that at the current time, you (we) may have to get more than one product to meet the requirements of an adminstrator.

Hope some of the information have been of help. Let me know if you need any more info. Best of luck

tony
