As far as I know you do no damage. In fact if you are connecting to the databases using the 'userid/passwd_at_connect_string' option, or setting the TWO_TASK environment variable, as problematic as setting ORACLE_SID I presume, you don't even need to have it set. Beware however this is an empirical determination.
