I would like to second the bit about ORACLE's install scripts being atrocious.

I Have had the misfortune of having to install 3 different versions of oralce on DEC ULTRIX. Anything before 6.0.35 was extremly time consuming, in that you had to wait around and answer Y|N|Q for each package to install. But with 6.0.36 they now ask you up front about which packages to install.

My second complaint about the install process is that they require _TWO_&_HALF_ _TIMES_ the storage of the application being installed, during the installation process, on the filesystem that you are installing on. This is because they first extract the compress CPIO file onto the filesystem, decompress it, and then extract from it. Why can they not do either:

Use /var/tmp for the temporary files.
or

uncompress and extract straight from the tape?

Just think of how much ADMINISTRATOR time the second option would save.

Another thing that got me really pissed of is that when I did a test UPGRADE from 6.0.34 to 6.0.36, I was installing some patches that dealt with the PRO* LANGUAGE facilties. We only have the PRO*C installed, but the PATCH fails because IT WANTS TO UPDATE _ALL_ OF THE PRO* LANGUAGES.

Again, with patches they send you entire libraries that are relevant to each patch (can you say 1.2Meg each * n). And the libraries are 85% unrelated extern tags from the headers.
