Craig, and the rest of you who replied by mail -- you know who you are :-) -- Thanks for your noting the "no ORDER BY in a subquery" proviso which I had been unable to find in TFM until now.
Taking away the ORDER BY and ROWNUM= certainly DO get rid of the error but don't accomplish my aim which was to get the reason codes for the 10 most-wasted parts in a given work center.
I'll try out the approach you outlined above when I get to work in the morning -- it looks like an interesting approach.
