ORACLE SHIPS TRUSTED ORACLE DEVELOPER'S RELEASE                         Security Effort Achieves Milestones

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., June 1, 1992 -- Oracle Corporation today announced the availability of the Developer's Release of Trusted ORACLE(TM) Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) Version 1.0, Oracle's new high security database product. This release is available initially on DEC SEVMS and Hewlett-Packard HP-UX BLS to customers and third party developers. Additional platforms, including compartmented mode workstations (CMW) such as DEC ULTRIX MLS+ will be available in 90 days. Availability on emerging systems such as SunOS CMW and ICL DRS/NX V4.0 Security Option is expected within 90 days of full production availability of the respective platforms.

The Trusted ORACLE Developer's Release contains all of the features that will be available in the production release of the product, along with full documentation and related software development tools. This advanced release of Trusted ORACLE will allow database developers to begin building new multilevel secure (MLS) applications and/or migrate and test current applications in anticipation of the forthcoming release of the production product.

"The availability of the Developer's Release is a response to the strong demand from our customers for immediate access to this new data security technology," said Linda Vetter, director of Oracle's Secure Systems. "The Developer's Release represents an important milestone toward delivering a high quality product for secure computing environments where anything less is unacceptable."

Trusted ORACLE and ORACLE(R) 7.0 reached another milestone by entering the Design Analysis Phase (DAP), the second of three phases in the U.S. National Computer Security Center's (NCSC) Trusted Product Evaluation Program. Trusted ORACLE is under evaluation at Class B1 and ORACLE 7.0 is under evaluation at Class C2 of the United States government's Trusted Computer System Evaluation Criteria or "Orange Book." Both products are designed to deliver exceptional security capabilities while also complying with ISO/ANSI SQL, open systems, and other standards that are critical to interoperability in heterogeneous computing environments.

Trusted ORACLE features enhanced data management security capabilities for organizations processing sensitive, proprietary, or even classified information. The product will include all of the features of Oracle's newest database technology plus mandatory access control security capabilities. Said Vetter, "We incorporated the latest ORACLE technology into our high security product because users shouldn't have to accept retrofitted versions of old database technology to get the security they need."

Trusted ORACLE extends the impressive security, integrity, and audit capabilities of standard ORACLE through the addition of mandatory access control (MAC). Mandatory access control differs primarily from the more traditional discretionary access control (DAC) due to the use of labels to identify the sensitivity of data and the clearances of users. A user's session label must match or dominate the label of the data he is attempting to access in order for access to be granted by the system. Since the sensitivity label remains associated with the data, inappropriate dissemination of the data is automatically controlled instead of solely relying on the user's "discretion." Extensive DAC is supported in the standard ORACLE product, with Trusted ORACLE supporting both DAC and MAC.

The extensive functionality of Trusted ORACLE will allow database developers to implement site-specific complex security, integrity, and business policies within the database in a consistent and declarative manner. Trusted ORACLE is designed to meet U.S. and international computer security standards as well as Oracle corporate standards for interoperability, integration, and portability to a wide range of tightly or loosely coupled symmetric multiprocessor machines running proprietary or UNIX multilevel secure operating systems.
