Jdeveloper BC4J and ODBC-JDBC bridge

I am trying to use the JDBC-ODBC bridge with BC4J in Jdeveloper version 9.0.3.1. I can create a database connection no problem. I can run queries with the SQL Worksheet just fine. However when I generate an application module and try to run the tester I get either a null pointer exception error or a application module not connected to database error.

I set up the internal connection setting to point to a oracle database and this made no difference.

One of my coworkers tried the same thing, he is using jdev 9.0.3.4 I believe. He had no luck either.

It seems make no difference what type of database I try to connect to:SQL Server, Access or pervasive SQL all error out in same way with JDBC-ODBC bridge.
