I agree with Daniel - there are several good NGs under comp.sys.sun that can answer your question.

I ran into a similar thing when I opened my Ultra5 a few years back. Acccording to a buddy who used to work at Sun, apparently (at least on mine) after opening the case there is a "magic something" in the NVRAM that wants to be reset. Internal timer sits at the blank blinking cursor for 15 minutes before that reset occurs unless you know the voodoo incantation to start it earlier. (Whether BS or not, I finally turned it on overnight and it did come back on it's own.)
