tnsping does read Sqlnet.ora... Atleast NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN entry. In order to correctly identify service name in tnsnames.ora, either it has to get the domain name from sqlnet.ora or you have to provide full service.domain name with tnsping command. After correct identification, it extracts protocol/host/port values.
