Forms 6i and required fields

Is there some way to put up a message to the user when a required field is [Quoted] null? Right now all it does is move the cursor to the field and that isn't [Quoted] very friendly for our use. It totally ignores the when-validate-item trigger [Quoted] code until there is a value in the field.
