Take a close look at Perforce www.perforce.com. You can try it out for free as it allows 2 client connections for free. It alows for basic version control/history functionality, ie. get latest version, check in/out, as well as very advanced functions such as branching. As it uses the SCC API it integrates nicely with the newest version of TOAD as well.
